Effluent Water Treatment
In 1996 we built a state of the art effluent water treatment plant to treat the waste water from our premises, under local authority licensing laws discharge has to be under 20 BOD and 30 Suspended solids, these targets have been successfully reached and results have been reached as low as 0 on different occasions.
They also treat wastewater for other business in the area including Albatross Seafoods, a white fish distributor aswell as Gallagher’s bakery in nearby Ardara, and process approx. 5 tanker loads weekly. The coopetition ensures they continue to meet the local council guidelines set down for waste water management. In addition, Fish Sales, a nearby seafood processor of white fish and C-Fish in Dunkineely, a manufacturer of seafood by-products for pet food both depend on the WWTP.
While both the WWTP and Hydro plant were key aspects in working towards a sustainable business, in more recent years Island Seafood’s has looked at improving the efficiencies within their plant, and reducing the energy and water requirements of the business as a whole. As part of this process a Green Team meets regularly to identify, develop, implement and monitor environmentally driven initiatives
